Mujaddara

Best Mujaddara Recipe

Description: As a seasoned chef, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring the rich culinary heritage of the Middle East, and Mujaddara is undoubtedly one of the most comforting and flavorful dishes I’ve had the privilege to cook and share. This classic Levantine dish is a staple in many households, and for good reason – the combination of tender lentils and crispy onions, all wrapped up in a warm, comforting bowl of aromatic rice, is simply irresistible. In this recipe, I’ll share my secrets for crafting the perfect Mujaddara, just like my grandmother used to make.

Prep Time: 15 mins | Cook Time: 30 mins | Servings: 4-6

Ingredients:
– 1 cup brown or green lentils, rinsed and drained
– 2 cups water
– 1 large onion, thinly sliced
– 2 tablespoons olive oil
– 1 teaspoon ground cumin
– 1 teaspoon ground coriander
– 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
– 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
– Salt, to taste
– 2 cups cooked white or brown rice
– 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or cilantro (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. In a medium saucepan, combine the lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils are tender. Season with salt to taste.
2. While the lentils cook, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes, or until they’re dark golden brown and crispy. Stir in the cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and cardamom. Cook for an additional minute, stirring constantly.

Pro Cooking Tips:
– To get the onions just right, make sure to stir them frequently and adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning. You want them to be crispy, but not burnt!

Serving Suggestions:
– Serve the Mujaddara hot, garnished with chopped parsley or cilantro, if desired. You can also add a dollop of yogurt or a sprinkle of sumac for added flavor and color.
– For an added layer of comfort, serve the Mujaddara with a side of warm pita bread or a simple green salad.
– Experiment with different spices or herbs to give the dish your own unique twist. A pinch of paprika or a sprinkle of sumac can add a lovely depth of flavor!
